Sex Addiction in Adolescents
For more information on teens visit KidsInTheHouse. We have to be more careful when you start using labels like addiction, or sexual addiction, with teenagers. Having said that, we do begin to see some teenagers who have the hallmarks of being addicted. We do see some teenagers who are more at higher risk. They tend to come from troubled backgrounds, families with low empathy,a high degree of dysfunction, you know, difficulty with bounding and attachment, not a lot of love going on. Those kids are at higher risk for addiction. So if that teenager is using pot, cocaine, drinking alcohol and compulsively sexual, that probably is a pretty good recipe for that kid to be on the road to addiction. Certainly at those times we will want to use addiction approaches but we have to be very careful with teenagers. So the programs have to be specialized to the teenager and the developmental exploration that goes on with kids has to be considered as part of the normative curve before you start labeling everything problematic.
According to a study by the journal, Pediatrics, teenage students who received a sext were 6 times more likely to report being sexually active. These types of behaviors also lead to a rise in sexually transmitted diseases and teen pregnancies. You might wonder at where the line is drawn between what is natural sexual exploration and what is damaging, or even an indicator of addiction. As far as what is morally acceptable, as a parent, that is something you have to consider for yourself based on teachings of Christ. We are not here to set moral boundaries for you or your teen, but we are here to help you encourage sexual health as to what you feel is best for your child. Often times, sex addiction occurs among those who feel they need to hide or avoid talking about sex, leading to feelings of confusion and shame.
This is the standardized text and clinical reference used by psychologists and therapists across North America to diagnose their clients. According to the American Psychological Association, there is evidence that points to behaviors, such as gambling, having the same high, or rush in the brain, which is similar to the use of drugs. In that way, addictions can resemble the physiological symptoms that the use of drugs and alcohol might create.
